Uhuru (Norma) Mbele is the founder of Tosunga Baninga.

'Tosunga Baninga' is a phrase in the Lingala language of Central Africa, meaning 'helping you to help others.

Uhuru shares why she founded the grassroots organisation in Evaton, South Africa. 

What do they do?

  • Support victims/survivors/striver of GBV
  • Tosunga Baninga has an overnight shelter that is inclusive of lesbian and bisexual womxn
  • Give support to families of the deceased.
  • Provide mediation between NPA and the families.
  • This court support, their impact statements and advocacy. 
  • The intentional narratives and meaning behind their fashion designs, jewellery, and activations. 

The discussion exposes many realities-

  • The truth behind the pandemic in our country is SGBVF- (sexual gender-based violence femicide).
  • We do not have any safe spaces. 
  • Uhuru gives lived experiences of how big organisations have exploited their work and utilised their IP for their gain. 
  • The disappointment of the recent GBV summit and why she will no longer participate in THE GBV Summit moving forward.
  • The fear of trying to survive as an activist.
